How Can You Help in a Dental Emergency?

We recommend that you contact us immediately in the event of a dental emergency. However, there are things you can do to help in certain situations:

Cracked or broken tooth

Avoid pressure in the area where your tooth is cracked. Avoid hot or cold foods or drinks. If the tooth is sensitive to air, use sugarless gum and soften it around the cracked tooth to help insulate it.

Swelling or redness in the face or gums

Phone our office immediately. Use cold pack or cold cloth around swollen area. If you are not allergic, use over the counter NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen to help control the swelling and pain.

Persistent bleeding in the mouth

Phone our office immediately. Use cold pack or cold cloth around the bleeding area. Avoid hot foods or drinks. Biting on cold gauze, cold cotton roll or cold black tea bag until you come to see us.

Loose tooth or knocked out tooth

Phone our office immediately. You must see us within 1 hour of this type of injury to have the best chance of success. Do not touch the root of the tooth, touch the biting surface only. Gently rinse the tooth in water and try to put in back in its place. If it won’t go in, put in in a container of milk or your own saliva.
