What is Botox and Letybo?

Botox and Letybo are both brand names for cosmetic wrinkle-relaxing injections known as neuromodulators. They are formulated from botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily interrupts chemical signals from your nerves to your facial muscles. By safely relaxing these muscles, the overlying skin smooths out, which drastically reduces the appearance of dynamic wrinkles caused by expressions like frowning, squinting, or laughing

Letybo is frequently used for dental and maxillofacial purposes to treat TMJ disorders, chronic jaw clenching, and severe nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism). While originally approved by Health Canada for cosmetic wrinkles, dentists and medical injectors routinely utilize Letybo as an “off-label” therapeutic treatment to safely relax the hyperactive jaw muscles that threaten your oral health.

What can neuromodulators do for your dental health?

  • Alleviates TMJ Pain: Involuntary clenching strains the temporomandibular joint, creating chronic jaw soreness, clicking sounds, and tension migraines. Letybo reduces this joint tension to give your jaw relief.
  • Mitigates Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): Injecting Letybo directly into the chewing muscles limits their ability to contract violently while you sleep. This stops you from fracturing enamel or destroying expensive dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or veneers.
  • Slims the Jawline (Masseter Hypertrophy): Overworking your jaw muscles acts like weightlifting, causing the masseter muscles on the side of your face to swell and create a square, boxy jawline. Letybo slightly thins this muscle, contouring the lower face into a softer shape.
  • Corrects a Gummy Smile: If hyperactive upper lip muscles pull your lip too far upward when you smile, precisely targeted micro-injections of Letybo can relax the lip line to lower your smile and reduce excess gum display.

How the Treatment Works

  • Targeting the Masseter and Temporalis: Your dentist or medical injector will map out your jaw anatomy and inject Letybo directly into your masseter muscle (the primary chewing muscle along your jawline) and sometimes your temporalis muscle (near your temples).
  • Dosing and Onset: Because the jaw is an exceptionally powerful muscle group, it requires a much higher dose than standard cosmetic wrinkle treatments—typically anywhere from 15 to 40+ units per side depending on your muscle thickness. Because Letybo features a highly purified formulation, you will typically feel the physical jaw tension begin to melt away within 2 to 4 days.
  • Lifespan: The therapeutic, muscle-relaxing benefits generally last between 6-9  months. Over time, as the muscle becomes trained to clench less aggressively, many patients find they can stretch the time between touch-ups further apart.

Will It Affect Your Ability to Chew?

A common concern is whether relaxing the jaw muscles will make eating difficult. Because the jaw relies on multiple overlapping muscle groups, your injector only delivers enough Letybo to take away the excessive, destructive forces of grinding. Your normal, day-to-day chewing and speaking functions will remain completely unhindered, though you may feel a slight, temporary weakness when biting into exceptionally tough foods like thick steaks for the first week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some quick answers related to botox.

No — the dose only takes away the destructive, excessive forces. Normal chewing and speaking are unaffected, with mild temporary weakness on very tough foods.

Therapeutic, muscle-relaxing benefits typically last 6–9 months, and intervals often stretch over time.
